Lentils – the little legume that packs a punch
They may be considered the “poor man’s meat,” but lentils are mega-rich – in vitamins, minerals and overall nutritional value.
Gotta Have ’Em
Despite being one of the oldest and most enduring food sources in the human diet (they date back some 8000 years), lentils are often overlooked, failing to get the credit they so deserve.
Yet, this humble, nutty-flavoured legume has managed to stand the test of time – and for good reason, or rather, many good reasons. Lentils are inexpensive and readily available worldwide and year-round, and they also pack a big nutritional punch with their super-high dietary values.
Lentils come in an assortment of colours: The most common are the green and brown varieties, but they also come inred, orange, yellow and black.
This legume is a popular staple ingredient in vegetarian and vegan diets, thanks to its high content of protein and iron, an essential mineral, especially for teenagers and pregnant women. And, as a testament to their versatility and popularity, lentils can be found in cuisines across the globe, but they’re particularly favoured in Indian and Middle Eastern dishes, in which they’re often served in combination with rice, vegetables and various spices.
Hidden Value
Over the years, because of their low cost and high protein content, lentils have earned a reputation for being the “poor man’s meat.” But in truth, there is nothing poor about them. Rich in valuable nutrients – including fibre, folate, iron, manganese, copper, phosphorus, thiamin, magnesium and potassium – lentils are purported to have numerous health benefits.
Like other legumes, lentils are packed full of both soluble and insoluble dietary fibre that, according to research, plays an important role in maintaining a healthy digestive system and normal cholesterol levels. Their high fibre and low GI properties also support normal blood-sugar balance, helping to prevent blood-sugar levels from rising too quickly after a meal. Moreover, the fibre in lentils also promotes normal digestive functions.
Love Your Heart
If that’s not enough to have you rushing off to make a delicious lentil soup, here’s more! Fibre content has also been linked to heart health. A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine demonstrated that the consumption of high-fibre foods, such as lentils, helps promote a healthy heart.
Lentils’ contribution to heart health lies not just in their fibre content, but also in the significant amounts of folate and magnesium these little wonders supply. A good supply of magnesium helps maintain the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, while folate helps the body remove toxins that can be damaging to the heart. Oh, and at just 230 calories per cup, you can eat your fill of lentils without the postmeal guilt!
Go Organic For - Peace of Mind
When only the best will do, you’ve got to go organic! And there’s one name you can trust – Ceres Organics. Ceres Organics’ range of dried and canned lentil products are sourced from the US, Canada and Turkey, and is certified organic by BioGro.
The crops are grown in nutrient-rich organic soil free from harmful pesticides and herbicides, processed according to organic methods and made available to the market through a sustainable and ethical distribution channel. This means that you are getting products with the highest quality and integrity.
